CWF supports transit justice

Affordable and high-quality mass transit systems are key to the survival of low-income and working people. Without adequate mobility, the most vulnerable Americans struggle to reach places of work, school, childcare and recreation.

In response to the budget gap, New York, like other states across the country, has cut mass transit service, laid off workers and hiked fares.

Meanwhile passenger cars are emitting more and more greenhouse gases into our fragile atmosphere. Innovations in fuel technology and vehicle electrification offer some hope, but they are not enough to mitigate impacts of increases in driving.

If we are build an equitable and environmentally sustainable transit system, we must act now.

The Center for Working Families is in conversation with local and national allies about various transit issues, including:

  • New auto insurance products to save low-income people money and reward good driving habits (Click here to read the proposal.)
  • Opportunities for reform offered by the impending reauthorization of the federal highway and transit bill, SAFETEA-LU
  • Revitalizing transit manufacturing, particularly in states with existing capacity like New York
